Present
Today in Panama Canal, 13,000 to 14,000 ships pass through the canal each year. In 1977, President Jimmy Carter and General Omar Torrijos of Panama signed treaties that transferred control to Panama in 1999, but gave the United States the right to use military force to protect the waterway against any threat to its neutrality. The expansion of the Panama Canal is held now to handle large ships for the modern use.
